BIOS is a operating system that boots your OS, it is in a ROM chip on your mommy
board.
CMOS is a bit of battery backed up RAM that the BIOS uses to store your
selections in the BIOS setup program. (originally in the clock chip)
Different OS and versions of OS differ because of different file systems
(FAT 16 FAT 32 etc) that have different addressing ranges. (improving with time)
