[Ham-Computers] Frustration with MS

If you buy the boxed version of any modern Linux distro you
will receive support from the manufacturer -- but fellow
user lists tend to be the best support and such is readily
available.

I can speak with great confidence for SuSE (now owned by
Novell) since I have been using it for a while and have
been so blessed by the user support that I have lacked a
need to even use the included company support.

As for trashing Bill Gates his name was not mentioned --
though one might suppose that his repeated assertions of
a secure and stable OS followed by hundreds of security
alerts and patches require one to question either his
integrity or technological competence.

The problem with Apple had nothing to do with Bill Gates,
for good or evil, their problem was transition from a
garage company to an international corporation.

Apple solved their technological problem by building
on the same platform as Linux -- Unix -- not by following
Microsoft down the flawed technological path of M$.

As for the path of technology had Bill Gates never been
born others would have met the demand for computers. Gates
is an accomplished entrepeneur and would have thrived as
a snake-oil salesman but he is clearly second-rate where
it comes to technological excellence and innovation.

Finally, the singular reason that Linux has not long since
obliterated Microsoft in the marketplace is the intentional
interference with hardware compatibility and software
intercompatibility sponsored by Microsoft -- yet Linux
continues to expand its installed base -- most recently
into educational institutions at the elementary, middle,
high school, and college level.

A very recent report shows significant growth in the
installed base of Linux on small servers in addition to
the already huge installed base on medium and large
servers.

With or without Bill Gates Microsoft is a quality-challenged
organization with Apple and Linux mastering increasingly
broad ranges of applications and consistently working around
the intentional roadblocks erected by Microsoft.

The race is on ... let's keep it a technological competition
rather than a personal one.
