Thanks, Dave, and I believe the max RAM on this laptop running under Win98SE is 160 MB all of which was added to the board.  If that isn't the max, probably far too late to do anything about it now!  Therein may well be the problem.  With that limitation of RAM I may well be fortunate that ScanDisk runs at all!

Yes, I, too have a WinXP, but for unknown reasons I like to keep the old ones going for as long as they are able to run.
