Duane,

You're right, there are few things that'll protect from a port invasion. XP has a firewall which is basic, and works quite well. But your environment is not XP.

I agree that just putting a hardware router between the (cable/DSL) modem and the computer will easily and cheaply take care of the problem. If your accesss is dial-up, this is not the solution, however.
