The free Zone Alarm via Earthlink (I think it is accessible if not on
Earthlink) will work on Windows 98 (and probably 95). Best solution is
a hardware firewall by getting a router. You can also link you PCs to
the same internet connection that way. I stopped using Zone Alarm when
I did that thinking it was causing problems. It was McAfee that was.
Just never started it again. No one can see my PCs, only router.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Re Firewall urgently Needed!
Hi All,
Wednesday my Windows 95B system was invaded by a hacker. I have Mcafee
with
updated .dat files operating, but it does nothing to prevent port
invasions.
Now I don't want this to sound like a 'gee the poor blind man' tale, so
do not
look at it that way. I have a serious problem and I need help, that
simple.
I need the two computers I operate every single day to allow me to do
the things I need to do so I can live in my home. i live alone. I use
them to do what computers do best, store and retrieve data. I also
manage a dozen qth.net lists and handle over a hundred pieces of e-mail
daily. I am as careful as I can be, but I do not have any means by which
to protect the systems from a port
invasion.
Zone Alarm is no longer available for Windows versions older than ME.
Black Ice barely supports Windows 98c. I have to have some kind of
firewall on the Windows
95B and the Windows 98 systems, and NOW!
Because of the very expensive technology these two systems use, it is
not practical to buy a new Windows XP Home Edition computer. It is very
complex to make the computer work correctly with the special adaptive
software and hardware that I use daily. The screen readin package I
would need for Windows XP Home Edition is $795! What I currently have
can not be upgraded to work because of the major design changes when a
DOS OS was still somewhat used. Hence, I must
make do with what I have. Somehow.
I would appreciate any suggestions regarding either Zone Alarm or Black
Ice, both of which do work with the screen reading software properly. I
don't care if it is an older version of Zone Alarm or Black Ice, as long
as it works with
Windows 95 and 98. I am willing to buy a used copy.
What can I do to keep the invaders out of my computer? The disaster of
Wednesday
i do NOT want to happen again, ever!
Thank you.
