At my employer's we used to run Linux as a firewall on a P166/64Mb box
without machine load problems. There were some 150+ users on the
corprate LAN side and a 800kbits/s upstream connectivity to our ISP.
(It has been replaced since then not because of technical problems
but as part of a major network alteration : mail relay, LAN wide
anti-span and anti-virus filters, etc... etc..)
At home, I use a system P200/128 with 3 NICs. It runs Suse Linux 8.2
and Shorewall (http://france.shorewall.net) almost straight out of the
box (just had to change the default number used by Shorewall in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d
and modify the supplied 3-arm firewall configuration files). It does
a good job with a NIC linked via a cross over cable to my Ethernet ADSL modem,
one towards my DMZ hub, and one towards my private LAN.
My suggestion would be that you could run it on a system back from a broker's
trash and put your TNOS on one of the systems of the private LAN.
