Sounds like Adware/Spyware got it's way onto his system. Often included as
part of a "great search tool" type utility that plugs-in to IE (such as
Hotbar). Ad/Spyware are applications that monitor your surfing habits and
target advertising according to your interests. Really obnoxious spy/adware
also put random pop-ups all over your display, often to p*rn sites.
Best thing to do is to download Ad-aware and/or Spybot and scan the system
for the root ad/spyware app. Both programs will also remove these apps.
Note: removing the ad/spyware may prevent the freebie app from running.
Also, running the freebie app might re-install the ad/spyware.
Spybot is available from http://security.kolla.de. It's completely free and
donations are accepted. Ad-aware is free for personal use and is available
at http://www.lavasoftusa.com. Make sure to run the program updater after
installing either app so that it will be able to find all current ad/spyware
apps (much like updating your anti-virus program).
Good luck and let me know if you need any additional help!

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Question about Win XP
Ok need some help on this end. I'm trying to tackle a friends computer
problem.
He's running Win XP, and using Juno as his ISP, he's using dial up.
I have the identical same setup as he does so thats why it has me stumped.
1st he gets lots of pop-up ads, I get some but not nearly as many as he
does, and when he does his take up the whole screen, but not all the time.
2nd when you double click on IE, it doesn't take off right away like mine
does, and too top that sometimes his will lock up for about 2 minutes then
all of a sudden it will take off.
I have cleared some programs off his computer that I felt he didn't need and
cleared out his Temp Internet files, and cleared this history out.
I have ran his AV program and it showed not viruses.
So thats what has me stumped, I'm no genious on computers but I keep mine
running smooth and fast, and can't figured out why his won't.
If someone can give me some insight I would appreciate it very much.

Brian
