Switch to one of the Linux distributions. ( 
http://www.linuxiso.org/index.php ) I suggest SuSe, Simply MEPIS or 
Mandrake.  Not only will this solve your Java problem but you will find 
many other annoying operating system idiosyncrasies will disappear.
