Woody,

I didn't say that I necessarily disagreed with you.  But like Joe Friday 
said, "just the facts, ma'am".  We have a friend flying in from Dallas tomorrow 
who pronounces it in just that way.  A Yankee would pronounce it "Pewter".  

And it's no dumber than people calling both transmitters and transmissions 
"Tranny" or (radio content) people calling the T-368/URT a "T3".  Or calling a 
BC-696 a "ARC-5".  Or calling a T-47/ART-13 a "ART-13"...  Et cetera et cetera 
ad infinitum ad endless naseum.  :-)
