Gene, your computer isn't sick, it's just got good taste. It's trying
to tell you to install linux! :)
Check your memory, or better yet, your computer's memory. Watch the RAM
countup when you boot and make sure it's the same amount you always
had. Also look for error messages.
Check your BIOS to make sure the settings are OK.
With the computer off, try reseating the RAM and various connectors.
Make sure nothing fell onto the motherboard.
Download some freeware memory and CPU or system testing utilities and
run them from floppy. A hardware problem can cause this. Also do a
thorough test of your hard drive. If you have a bad sector and a file
is corrupted, that can also cause the problem.
Do a MEM at the DOS prompt and see that it's correct.
