Thanks to the several who responded. I knew (know) about pings but if I ever
knew that the protocol had a name, I'd obviously forgotten it. The
interesting thing is that the last time I reinstalled the OS before the two recent
Java Script problems (which was probably in early 2003 when I upgraded the boot
drive), I don't recall doing anything specific to tell Norton to block them,
but I wasn't bothered by them. Same with the next time I reinstalled the OS
about five weeks ago now. But since the reinstallation of three weeks ago, they
crop up. Same Norton version in all three cases.

Norton ID's the source and destination IP addresses but not any specific
program or application. The local (Source) IP is this machine for outbound and
the local IP of the Compuserve PPP for inbound. So the inbound ping only occurs
when I'm logged into our Compuserve email account (the PPP connection goes
away when I close CS.com). I recall a plague of this two or three years ago but
then it stopped.

I'm beginning to suspect that the outbound ping only occurs when I'm logged
into our third party auction management site as it sometimes happens
immediately after I click the browser GO button to log in.
