Don, looks like you already got the right answers.  To summarize...

With ethernet...
PC <--> PC via crossover cable
PC <--> hub/switch <--> PC via straight-through ethernet cable (or wireless
<g>)

However, note that straight-through ethernet is not physically wired
"straight through".  Standard two-pair ethernet only uses pins 1, 2, 3, and
6.  If you're using less common 2-pair cable, no problem.  But, if you're
using 4-pair cable (as most Cat5/5e/6 is), you'll need to pay careful
attention to the 2nd pair (pins 3&6).  Not a problem if you buy pre-made
ethernet cables, but if you're making your own, this is an important point.
