you're going to get random noise and on-purpose pings when you're
connected.  It's good that they're being registered and blocked.

That's very interesting.
Will NIS tell you which program is trying to get out?

If not, try Zonealarm (Zonelabs.com).  It's a free internet firewall
that stops traffic both ways.  It will tell you what wants in and out.
