My W2K CD (for the machine that's gone down twice) is a fairly early one so
after installing the OS the first upgrade from the Microsoft site to install is
IE6 SP1. I'm 98% sure that the latest Java version is installed along with
that.

I haven't done that. Thought I'd ask here first. The two machines that have
failed don't have a whole lot in common other than both are running W2K. So
I thought it might be a recent common problem.

The Microsoft manual or semi-auto upgrades never ask for that.
I've never owned a machine with 95 or 98 on it. Had an XP machine for a
short time. The hard drive died early and Gateway wouldn't install W2K on it when
they replaced the failed hard drive. So on the way home with it, I bought a
retail W2K CD, booted it from the CD, repartitioned and formatted the hard
drive, and installed W2K.

It's only on one of the machines. I have a Xerox DC535 that I use to do
scan-to-file in support of my TM business. I run FTP services so that I don't
have to install Xerox's Centreware software. But the IIS installation only has
Common Components, FTP Server and IIS Plug-in installed, not the rest of the
stuff.

Well, I've thought about that. But we run some limited distribution software
in support of our eBay business and I'm not sure I want to try to find out
whether any of it will run under Linux. Plus the learning curve. And I don't
know anything about how to network Unix equipment. We don't have a dedicated
server.
