have you tried reinstalling Java itself? *might* help.

Also check the MS knowledgebase online for error messages or similar
occurances. It's a good resource when you're sitting there scratching
your head - and I've done a lot of that :)

Also look for anything related to Norton products. Some installs ask
you to disable NAV (although that would be pretty silly). NAV will also
go batty if you upgrade a 98 machine to W2k without uninstalling first.

do you absolutely need it? It's a security risk (not related to your
other problem). MS has guidelines for tightening down IIS if you have
to use it. I strongly suggest you check them out.

As if that wasn't enough trouble, XP SP2 is near. I shudder to think
what kind of problems THAT will cause. Unfortunately I'm going to have
to deal with it at work, where we're plagued with quite a few XP
machines.

My W2k boxes and servers haven't had the problems you describe.

I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention that I've been problem free with
both of my linux boxes :) If you ever want to check it out, you can
download a free .ISO file from knoppix.net. It will burn a bootable cd
that will detect your hardware and inet connection, and run in ram,
without using your hard drive. You can install it if you want but you
don't have to.

Good luck,
-jeff
