Perhaps you missed the excellent post by Aaron Hsu on DOS. Get it out of the
archives and read it. Very helpful!	
	
Aaron is a DOS dude, as am I! It still works far better than Windows in many
many ways.

   For DOS to have a CDROM in it, you need MSCDEX.? and a driver from M$ or the 
drive maker installed.  The driver is called from config.sys and MSCDEX.? is 
called from autoexec.bat
   One or both of these are a BIOS extension, as older confusors didn't know of 
such a beast.

   I have been out totally of M$ since 1997, but I remember this much.
