Hi John
I have XP home on two computers now and all is fine.
EXCEPT, I use a usb to serial interface for APRS and
from time to time it stops. What I have found is the system
is somehow thinking the data coming in from the serial port
must somehow be a MS serial mouse and it tries to install
the serial mouse. At that point my comm ports quit and
I have to do a lot of fiddling to get it going.
This may not be your problem but it took me a while to
find it and figure out what happened.
One other thought is that on the old computer I changed
over to XP, I had all kinds of problems getting it to work
with the memory chips I had in the machine for years and
which worked fine on 98 and then ME. However when I
tried to do the upgrade to XP, it told me I had a problem
and I had to look carefully to note I did not have the full
complement of memory being recogonized by the system
as the amount of memory installed. In reviewing the screens
I finally changed out one of the memory chips and XP
was happy and everything proceeded normally.
This might be what happened and if you didn't notice
carefully how the boot up progressed, or did not have
it visible during boot, could be a problem.
Again, this is XP Home and not XP Pro so your mileage may vary
Hope this was of some help
