Phillip:
The easiest way to do your thing is to purchas a serial to USB adapter(s);
the 'serial'end of the adapter still sees it as a serial port and the
computer will use the USB end.
If you try to use an add-on multi-ort serial card, you will always have a
IRQ problem: there are not enough IRQ's available.
I had this same problem when I hooked up my GPS rcvr to my laptop - the 'top
did not have an external serial port, so I had to use the USB adapter. It
works FB!
I believe that Belkin (www.belkin.com) has the adapters.

Subject: [Ham-Computers] "Extra" serial ports for rig control?
Hi.
I have a 'pooter running a Intel P III with the usual 2 serial (com 1 and
com 2), parallel, game and 2 USB ports as well as a modem operating as com4.
I use the two serial ports for rig control RTTY decoding on a Yaesu VR-5000
receiver. This evening I'm getting ready to install a 2nd receiver (Yaesu
FRG-100) that I also want to add rig control and probably a 2nd digi mode
decoder to.
Here's the present set-up. The two present serial ports are the usual com 1
& com 2 on the motherboard as is the parallel port, soundcard is a Standard
SB AWE64 with it's two IRQ's (CAN-NOT use a PCI soundcard with some of my
software). I THINK I'M OUT OF IRQ'S! The USB ports contain the scanner and
printer and I have a 4 port USB hub that isn't presently connected.
Questions: I believe I've seen serial I/O cards with up to 8 serial ports
(I'd be happy with 4-6 total). I think I can disable the MB serial ports
and the parallel port IF NEEDED. Do these I/O cards use the PCI bus or how
do they get around the IRQ problem?? I DO NOT want to try to use the USB
ports for serial interface as I'm not sure some of my rig control software
would see the USB ports.
What do contest stations that have a gazillion things to control use to get
around the problem, and COST IS A FACTOR HERE! I have a "extra" old I/O
card with the usual collection of ports but don't think I could make it work
as I have no jumper data on the card and I'd still have the IRQ problem.
