described quite easily, once we knew what we were looking for. Now I just have

Duane,

Most laptops have a small port for a "Kensington" style security cable (named
after the company that developed it).  The port is an oval "hole" approx 1/4
inch by 1/8 inch in size and goes through the metal frame of the laptop.  You'll
generally find this port on either the left or right side of the laptop.

The Kensington security cable consists of a small, cylindrical key-lock (about 1
by 1.5 inches) with a small oval male end that mates with the security port on
the laptop.  Attached to the key-lock is a long re-enforced steel cable with a
small loop on the other end.  Wrap the cable around something secure, slip the
key-lock through the loop, and then attach to the security port on the laptop. 
There are several different variations available and they start around $40 each
(street price).  Many portable peripherals now also have the security port and
cables with multiple key-locks are also available.

I am thinking I would be wise to put some kind of anti theft device on my Compaq
1210 laptop computer while it is keeping me company in the hospital. I find no
provisions for a lock or chain on the unit itself. Any suggestions as to how one
might be attached?
