[Ham-Computers] Intermittent Computer lockup under Norton

Steven, my experience has been mixed on that score.
My W98SE shack computer with a max load of 384 Megs of RAM worked fine for
the longest then started getting flakey. Finally the Norton Diagnostic
pronounced a memory error. Replacing that memory stick apparently corrected
the problem since all the instability went away.
But, the confusing part is that with three sticks, two of which work
flawlessly in Bank O, installed in Banks 0, 1 and 2, I get a memory error
in the address space of Bank 1! Reduce the total RAM to 256 megs and any
combination of sticks fails to produce any errors. Install any other stick
in Bank 2 and back comes the error in Bank 1 address space. The bad stick
when installed in Bank 0 was definitely the problem maker since the
computer would hardly run with it installed alone.
I ended up with only 256 megs since that is plenty for my applications. So,
you may well be right that under the right circumstances, Norton may find
non-existent errors, but it can also find real ones.
I have 512 megs on this Me office machine and Norton has never yet found a
memory error (!).
Go figure . . .
