Duane,
I had a problem with MacAfee AntiVirus too just a few days ago, but MacAfee
only messed up my e-mail: MacAfee made my Outlook Express e-mail extremely
slow to start, which made the dialer take forever to start too. MacAfee
also caused my e-mail program to completely freeze every time I tried to
start writing a new message. My problem was that MacAfee deleted the
imagehlp.dll file in my C:\Windows\System folder. Strangely, I was able
to find the missing file intact in my C:\Windows\Temp folder, and
everything started working fine after I moved the file back into my
C:\Windows\System folder. I've heard that MacAfee usually renames the
original imagehlp.dll file something else (like imagehlp.bak) and
substitutes its own corrupted version instead - which of course causes the
same problems as deleting the original imagehlp.dll file. There is a
knowledgebase article at the Dell website that explains this problem, and
there are some at the Microsoft website as well.
MacAfee does a lot of strange things to your system and, according to what
I've heard from MacAfee, many of the problems occur when you un-install it.
It's almost as if it's getting even for your getting rid of it.
Unfortunately, re-installing it usually doesn't fix things.
MacAfee has an on-line "chat with a technician" help option at their
website, which operates similarly to instant messaging, but they were
completely clueless about the imagehlp.dll file problem. You might have
better luck with them on troubleshooting your particular problem, though.
>From your description, it's probably not the missing imagehlp.dll file
problem. But there's a good chance that your problem (like mine) was caused
by MacAfee, and not by any virus.

Help! My primary computer has suddenly developed a problem.
I use this system for my admin work on qth.net I have Mcafee 5.15 with the
latest .dat files running on it. I rarely every wander the web and almost
never
open an attachment. This system has been getting hit with a lot of viruses
as of
late, the clege one mostly. Mcafee alerts me, I delete it and then kill all
files in the 'delted items' folder.
