Wow, a sTinkPad 750cs. It's been a while since I last touched one of those.
If I remember correctly, they were 80486DX based systems shipped with 4MB
RAM and 300 to 800MB HD's. What I can't remember is if they're "Reference
Disk" based (the "RefDisk" is the CMOS setup program for PS/2's).

If it's RefDisk based, you'll need to boot from the RefDisk. From there,
you'll be able to change the printer port base address to "278".

If it's not RefDisk based, then there's a BIOS based setup program. I don't
remember specifically how to enter the setup program on the 750cs, but the
usual combinations for "true blue" IBM systems was one of the following
(depending on system)

* <CTRL><ALT><Insert> when the cursor went from top left to top right of the
screen during POST

* Press and hold the <F1> key, then power up the system and wait for the
error

* Press <F1> or <F2> when prompted during POST.

Once you're in the CMOS setup, everything on the ThinkPad was pictograms
with a birdie for the mouse cursor. There's an area to set the port options
and you can select "278" for the parallel port.

Another option (and probably a bit easier) is to change the driver options
for the backpack drive. I'm pretty sure the Backpack driver can be
configured to look for the Backpack drive on different LPT ports. Actually,
I'm surprised that it's looking for the drive on 278 as that is the usually
LPT2 (or even LPT3 if port 3BC is enabled). Port 378 is typically LPT1
(LPT2 if 3BC is enabled). Check with Microsolutions website to see if it
gives any hints. They're support is usually pretty good. They're at:

p.s. You mentioned "3C8". That's definitely not a "standard" parallel port
address. Did you mean "3F8"?

Subject: [Ham-Computers] Port

Pardon the bother, but I have lost the manual for my
IBM Thinkpad, model 750Cs, and I need to change
the address of LPT1 from 3C8 to 278 for a "Backpack"
CD drive.

Can anyone help?

Mike
