Hello all
This week I installed XP Pro on my 'pooter along with MS Office XP Pro.
(P3 600MHz). So far I'm very pleased with the results as even the few
DOS programs that I wanted to keep are running fine under it (Log-EQF,
some design programs). Only program that didn't run is my SWL logging
program RL2002 , which I was warned by the vender that it wouldn't as it
requires Imaging for Windows which has been dropped by XP.
Before starting to load XP, I partitioned the 10 GB drive into two
partitions, C and E as 4.5 & 5.5GB. I then "cloned" the complete
win98SE from my "backup" drive to the primary partition using
"Drive-Copy". Win98SE works fine. I then loaded the XP Pro to the
second partition as a dual boot system. Both operating systems are
working GREAT with no problems. I can boot 98 or XP. And run the
appropriate programs from the appropriate partition. I can even run the
Win 98 and DOS stuff that is on partition C from XP (but not the reverse
as Win98 doesn't even see that partition).
My question is this. The system is running so well that I anticipate
completely removing Win98 from the computer down the road, just as soon
as the new XP compatible RL2002 is released (it's coming). As I'm
running 2 10GB drives there is no problem setting the backup drive to a
single partition and cloning the XP partition into that drive as drive
"C". The only thing I wonder about is, the files that XP placed in the
Win98 drive C partition to allow the machine to boot will be gone.
WILL XP RECOGNIZE THAT DRIVE C NO LONGER EXISTS AND ALLOW XP TO BOOT
ANYWAY OR DO I NEED TO COPY SOME OF THOSE FRILES ONTO THE 2ND
PARTITION??
Incidentally, I really like this XP Pro so far, it really does boot
quicker than Win98SE did and with Office XP loaded everything seems to
work better as I don't have a mish mash of various word processors,
spreadsheets, image viewers etc.
