Hi Gene and group,
I am thrilled to announce success, although, as is so often the case with
Windows, it wasn't quite so cut and dry as to download a patch.
Gene gets great thanks for steering me to the patch site which, in addition
to the patch download, has a "read this first" link...safety tip...read that
first. I had no idea, but such things as corrupt closure sound file,
drivers for stuff you never knew you had, etc can over-write the area of
memory used when closing to the "it's safe to turn off" screen.
In my case, I noticed that my problem PC, which is a new setup with almost
nothing installed, had a list of running TSR's about 18 more than my more
mature PC...a short comparison reveled a list of suspects...found a couple
of files referencing something called Intercast Cache...a little homework
reveals that this whole Intercast thing and the accompanying web services it
drags along, were installed the other day when I switched my sound card to
the PCI128 Soundblaster, which was needed for some DSP programs and
decoders.
In any case, a quick uninstall and deletion of subdirectories solved the
shutdown problem, noticeably sped up the general operations of this PC and
the exhaust air smells noticeably fresher.
Apparently, the Intercast stuff is some accessory protocol for viewing video
files and listening via the Soundblaster-or some such
thing...anyway-superfluous and gone = works fine.
I appreciate the pointer, Gene.
regards
John Collins
