[Hallicrafters] SX-28 variable inductor slug of S3 is loose

I need some help, S3 the inductor for the low end of band 3 is loose inside the coil form, it is supposed to adjust with a threaded rod, the rod turns and goes in and out of the form but doesn't move the slug, when I turn the radio back over the slug slides down and knocks that band way out of alignment, has anyone ever gotten inside one of these? I'm afraid to try without some kind of guidance and it looks difficult to take it out of the radio, any help will be appreciated,
