Hi, My SX-117 on 40 meters with a strong signal at about 7.15 MHz CW and adjusted to S-9 with the RF sensitivity shows the following:
   BW KHz S-meter
        5 S-9
        2.5 S-7
        0.5. S-3 or 4

OK - just fired up my SX-117, which I restored and works fairly well. Not sure if it's a late or early one, but I can provide the SN if anyone's interested. Here is what I got on the S-meter on 40M SSB with a single strong heterodyne signal:

SSB Setting. Bandwidth S-meter reading
     7.255 MHz 5 Khz S8
                               2.5 KHz S9
                                0.5 KHz S4

The move from 5 to 2.5 KHz BW resulted in a small (approx 1 S unit) increase and barely noticeable increase in signal strength audibly. But the drop in reading from 2.5 KHz to 0.5 KHz was significant as would be expected with the much narrower bandwidith.

Hope that helps.
