Well, they may LOOK square, but I think you'll find they are actually 4
flute Bristol spline drives.  If they're square now, someone buggered them.

I guess a thin flat blade screwdriver "may" work, but you'd be much better
off using the proper tool.

My SX-99's knobs take a square bit.  I used a flat blade screw driver.
