[Hallicrafters] Rolled gears?

Hello All,

 

Somewhere in the back of my memory, about 1955, the salesman in a ham radio
store in Oakland (Alameda?) said that Hallicrafters had come up with a
method of making no-backlash gears by forming the teeth by rolling one gear
against the other---hard steel against aluminum? Does anyone know anything
about this, or was it just another urban myth? 

 

The latest model in the showroom sure had silky feeling main and bandspread
controls.
