Hi Skip,
 
It depends upon how loose the slug is.
 
Bee's wax or paraffin wax thinly applied to the slug works if it is not too loose.
 
For a real loose one cut a rubber band in two. Insert it into the core until it reaches the bottom, insert the slug and tune it to the proper place then snip the excess at the bottom and top.
 
I have also had good luck with a length of waxed flat lacing cord done the same way as the rubber band. Waxed floss works well also.
