The "bomb" had a form of radio-altimeter in it, to guarantee an "air 
burst".. the S-27 could "listen" to the signal they used, to verifiy proper 
operation of the transponder.  If you look at pictures of both "Fat Man" and 
"Little Boy", you'll see the antenna, which looks like a half-loop with a 
strut in the middle - that's it.  Later glideslope antennas kind of looked 
likeit.
