[Hallicrafters] Communications Receivers - why speakers separate?

Thanks for all the feedback on this one.
I reckon I have a few good answers in here!
I know how big some speakers could get, I have an R46B on my SX101.
Certainly a lot of reasons why the old receivers had separate speakers.
It's funny that the practice continued on into the solid state era when
there was so much spare room under the hood (like the
Lafayette/Hallicrafters/Trio) and speakers had become quite cheap.

Regards
