If someone wants cheaper rates the best way I know is to find a commercial 
shipper who will ship your package for their rates.  That applies in 
Australia as well as the US.

Locally I have a shipper that I have a charge account with that will ship my 
packages for their cost.  It is  much cheaper than a one time  charge.  If 
the person who sold the microphone is a regular commercial shipper they may 
be stiffing the purchaser.  If they are not, then the costs are as you have 
seen.

If I won a purchase on eBay and the seller was charging full commercial 
rates, then I would refuse the sale and take my lumps on brownie points.
