Yaesu made the Tempo One for Henry Radio, not Trio/Kenwood. Have heard
some guys say they thought the later-offered Tempo 2020 (a fairly high-end
hybrid transceiver) was made by Kenwood, but in actuality it was made by
Uniden, who made numerous assorted HF and VHF transceivers for quite a few US
ham radio suppliers (one example is the Clegg FM-76, Cobra 200, and Midland
13-509.........all were essentially the same 10 watt 220 MHz FM
transceivers, differing only in cosmetics). Trio/Kenwood made quite a few early 2
meter FM rigs for RL Drake, too. Belcom made KLM's Echo II and Echo 70
(early solid-state 2 meter and 70 CM SSB/CW transceivers) as well as a couple
of Heath (non-kit) handhelds (but more of Heath's "factory built" FM stuff
was made by Marantz/Standard). The SBE "Sidebander 6" (6 meters SSB/CW)
was also made by Belcom...........Mizuho made an assortment of low power SSB
handheld transceivers for AEA, and the list goes on and on and ON.

Richard,

I won't dispute Chuck Dachis history of Hallicrafters.

There are two separate Echophones listed.

1 - Echophone Radio Corporation

2 - Echophone Radio Manufacturing Company.

I can only find a small number of the schematics that show "Echophone
Manufactured by Hallicrafters".

Then they have no such markings. I guess it is a confusing period of
time when they indeed DID overlap.

It was an interesting read, but it is somewhat similar to Rockwell /
Collins. Remember the KWM-380.

Rockwell went on to produce the B-1 Bomber, then followed by Boeing
involved in the B-1B version, primarily in the avionics.

Many of the older brands came, went, and/or changed hands.

I find the same with wall clocks. I have two that are "Eikosha", and
this is the earlier name for Seiko. I also have one that is "Seikosha".

Trying to determine which is which ends up being very tangled.

I've traced many different manufacturers histories. I had been
primarily been interested in clocks, but I have also had interested in
transceivers. Kenwood has one of these morphing brands. It appeared as
several different names. They also produced the Tempo One. Other names
appear to have been used prior to the current one. They branded their
earlier radios under Trio-Kenwood.

It wasn't long after that when they began just as Kenwood.

I also found a different "Kenwood". They are based in Canada, and
manufacturer kitchen Mixers and Grinders. They have NO ties to the
Japan's Kenwood.

I went through quite a bit of haggling with Customs when ordering
parts! This completely due to the use of Kenwood as a brand name. I
finally prevailed and obtained the parts I ordered.

I've come to the conclusion that the history of ANY brand to be a bit
cloudy, and not at all simply black or white. There are many areas that
are in the gray area.

Regards,
Bob - N0DGN
