Probably a Slinky antenna. Primarily for limited space or portable use with different distances possible. Mixed reviews, either people love them or hate them. Haven't used one myself. More info here: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/7374 or make your own using an off the shelf toy slinky.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Antenna question

Hi,  yesterday at the Spokane, WA Hamfest an antenna was strung up outside with a co-ax leading inside.  The question is on the antenna characteristics.  It was a dipole (maybe 50 feet end to end) but the wire was like a large coil.  The coil was about 6 inches in diameter and a loop about every 6 inches.  It was supported by a nylon line so could have been stretched out maybe to 100 feet or so.  Is the coil loops just for putting up the antenna between different distance objects or is there some electrical effect for the loops? Thanks.
