[Hallicrafters] SX-28 photos

Brian,


Please don't take this the wrong way; but if you have very little restoration experience, you have no business going into an SX-28.  This receiver is difficult to do at best.  Please, please, PLEASE get your feet wet with something simpler before going there.

I would recommend one of the following for a first restoration project:

National NC-57
National NC-173

The 173 is a rather more complex radio than the NC-57 which is rather basic... however, National receivers IN GENERAL are laid out more straightforwardly than Hallicrafters gear, and are therefore easier to work on.  (They are also generally better performers.)  If you have some experience with tube gear, a 173 wouldn't be unreasonable; but if not, go with the 57.

Of Halli receivers, I recommend that you get hold of one of the following:

S-20R (very basic)
S-22R (very basic, but also AC-DC in a metal cabinet -- an isolation transformer is a MUST to avoid serious shock hazards)
SX-24 (a little more complex)
SX-25 (still more complex, but do-able by a novice, with care and patience)
S-40 (a reboxed S-20R)
S-85 (a reboxed S-20R and S-40)
SX-99 (a somewhat modernized SX-24)
SX-110 (a reboxed SX-99)

You will have to replace ALL the paper capacitors, the electrolytics, and probably -- in the pre-and immediate post-war stuff, a good many of the carbon resistors.  One of these simpler receivers will give you a good feel for what this is like.

Whatever you choose, DON'T get a rustbucket.  There's always a better one.

Before you even stick a screwdriver into the SX-28, be sure and go to the Phil's Old Radios web site and check out the article on SX-28 restoration.  Follow the Biblical admonition:  "Thy words were found; and I did eat them."  disgest it WELL.

After cleaning up the SX-28 a bit last evening, I'm somewhat more optimistic
about the possibility of its being restored. Since I have very little

worked on one.
