Hello Joe,
Thanks for the link! There really is a wealth of information there on the
SX-28. It does turn out that mine is a very early model, dating to the first
six months of production of that model in 1940.
Doing a restoration is well above my pay grade! I'm just at the stage of
finding out what I've got. I really don't know to what extent it is
restorable, and was hoping that subscribers to the Hallicrafters list would
be willing to comment about that after looking at pictures of it.
Is there a way to post photos to the list, or should I do up a .pdf of them
to send to whoever is interested?
Cheers,
Brian
Brian:
Here's the bible for SX-28s. It should have all the information you
need.

SX-28, especially the procedure for recapping the RF section. May as well
replace all the resistors while you're in that part; it's not somewhere you
want to have to go twice.

already know how risky, indeed foolhardy, this would be. There's no telling
how long it's been since the last time it was powered up, and the
electrolytics may be bad. All too easy to make a Krispy Kritter out of the
power transformer, and they are practically unobtanium now.
