[Hallicrafters] UPS Pack n' SHip

The "foam in place" system has been around since the late 1960s.  From 1970, until 1979, I owned the Motorola reconditioning center for the south-central United States.  We used that method for shipping complete Motorola two-way radios.

We shipped between 50 and 100 units every week by carriers ranging from UPS to major freight lines.  The only package damaged was by UPS when they ran a forklift tong through the box.  Per their usual policy when an article is damaged, UPS tried the "not properly packed" routine to keep from paying the claim!

It took a telephone call from a Motorola vice-president to the CEO of UPS to get the claim paid.  Motorola was shipping, from the Schamburg, Illinois, plant, hundreds of radios a day and a good portion of those were shipped using UPS.  When the Motorola vice-president threatened to stop using UPS, the UPS CEO immediately made sure the claim was immediately paid.

I used UPS for well over 3-decades and the only problem was the forklift tong.  But, several years ago, virtually everything that I shipped and that I received came in damaged.  Those items in which the box didn't show abuse often came with loose hardware, parts, etc. caused by excessive vibration.  As a result of that, I switched to FedEx Ground and haven't had a single problem since.  I have had units, that definitely were not properly packed, come in without any damage.  If UPS had been the carrier, the contents would have almost certainly be destroyed!

Also, FedEx Ground is usually a fair amount cheaper than UPS.

I could not agree with Mike, more.  There IS an alternative, however.  The
UPS "Customer Service CENTER" (not store) here in Denver, has a terrific
method that's available IF you ask for it.  They use catalytically-activated
foam "pillows", to create a  custom shipping container inside the box that's
"FORM FITTED" to whatever you're sending.  The great part is that you can
also REUSE it, as it fits perfectly.  Unlike bubble or peanuts (which do
NOTHNG but shift, and get into everything), the foam material is contained
within the plastic sack it comes in (multiple sizes).  I've shipped
SX-62A's, SP-600's, and a pair of Multi-Elmac AF-67's, using this method,
and they arrive in PERFECT CONDITION.  Warning - NOT ALL UPS CSC's have this
stuff, so call & ask, first.
