This is true. The reason.... Very old Elevators used 100 volts dc. When I worked for Ups back in the 80's I got to ride in Some real doozies! The flatiron building had elevators which used water as propulsion. I was in one on Broadway that was the size of a phone booth which had a Cable passing thru the car for motor control and floor markers. Many older elevators ran on dc by Edison electric which con Edison continued service to them into the 90's. some of these elevators were scary, some were beautiful works of art. The American ballet theater has two nice elevators which are brass and wood with open cages and operators. Many wonders in the city for sure..
