    These radios are often missing the back.  Beside other 
places there is a manual at BAMA.  The S-38 had a separate 
BFO with adjustment control on the front plus a noise 
limiter using the diode in the BFO tube. Hallicrafters came 
up with a patented circuit for making the IF stage 
regenerative which acted as a BFO plus probably added some 
selectivity. This was found in the S-38B and later.  These 
are pretty good AA-5 AC/DC radios.  My first short wave 
receiver was an S-38B bought new after nagging my parents 
about it.  Had I known more or had some advice I would have 
gotten something else used for the same money. Nonetheless, 
it opened up a new world for me.
