[Hallicrafters] HT-37 initial test

Hi Bill, Jim, et al,
I also have an HT-32 that's used weekly as net ctrl on the Vintage SB
Net. There's been a lot said about the -32 & -37 here, or on other
lists recently, concerning the same sort of situation you're in.
No matter what your approach is, if it's been sitting for 8 yrs with no
power on it, unless it's been in "air conditioned comfort" the whole
time, make sure it is dried out before you put any power on it. You can
use a 75 or 100 watt bulb to do that, put the chassis up on some blocks
with the light under it, make an "oven" with cardboard box matl, or thin
plywood, etc., to surround & cover it and keep the heat in. The
objective is to get everything up to 120-130F for a day or 3 and let out
any moisture that's in any of the transformer windings, etc.
There's lots been said re: solid stating, Copper Tops, variacs, bucking
transformers, etc. Everyone has they're favorite opinion. Some of
what I've done can be found at <http://www.boatanchors.org/HT37.htm>,
solid stating and isolating the fil. windings is abt half way down.

> Bill, I have worked on HT-37's and 32's. In fact my primary station transmitter is an HT-32. They essentially have the same power supply in them. I would go ahead with the variac but with the stock rectifiers in it. This way you can be sure there are not any problems with it prior to solid stating the power supply. If there are problems, you can correct them prior to making the mods. I would definitely do the solid state mod, as it cuts down on heat by a huge amount, not to mention the higher B+ voltage.

The power supply is unmodified an the transformer looks origanial. I plan to remove/isolate the 5V windings and replace the rectifier tubes with Weber Copper tops before bringing up on a variac. Anything else? Tnx Bill KE7KK
