Old time radio repair shops used to keep several new strings in stock
hanging from hooks with weights on them so they would be prestretched and
always ready to install. Nothing like having new string and some tension stored
in the spring to keep it tight.

What about using liquid rosin flux? Or make your own. Get some
pitchers' powdered rosin at you local sporting goods store and dissolve
it in alcohol.
