Thanks for the suggestions for solving my dial problem. I finally managed
to get it working--after innumerable attempts. I thought I should
summarize the suggestions in order to help any other poor soul who has to
do this. I know the dial on the SX110 isn't as complicated as on some
others, but it presented a frustrating, hair pulling, exercise.

1. clean any oil off the pulleys which may have gotten on there while
lubricating them.
2. apply rosin or bees wax to the dial cord--dissolving the rosin in a bit
of alcohol is helpful
3. apply an additional wrap around the spindle for additional friction
4. match the dial cord diameter to the original--I found this out the hard
way. I had been using genuine dial cord from Antique Electronics and I
then realized that it was much larger than the original. Replacing it with
cord closer to the original size, the dial worked as it should.

When I found this radio, I did not realize the hard life it had lived.
After removing the chassis, I found a HUGE mouse nest in the underside.
The little bugger had built quite a home for himself (or herself) and
enjoyed some of the tasty insulation. The entire radio must have spent
several years living above a deep fryer manned by a chain smoking cook
because there was a thick yellow, greasy film covering everything. Then,
some where in its life someone drilled some extra holes and attempted to
replace the filter caps--but screwed up the wiring.

Now she sings again--using her Hallicrafter branded tubes! I feel good!
