Hopefully someone more experienced with the 1650 khz IF alignment process
will step forward to mentor us on any "tricks of the trade".  Sounds like
you were on track save for the difficulty getting the 1650 khz signal
centered in the pass band. But that was before you changed out the caps and
resistors in the circuitry if I read your post correctly.  Hopefully you
will get a break on the weather so you can find out if you can complete the
alignment with the new components in place.  OTOH,  can't say that I blame
you for staying out of the garage! ;-)
