Hi Don:
Is the HV stable while this is happening?
Did it start after you re-capped it or aligned or was it always that way?
Does the radio work at all after the crackling goes away?
Wiggle all of the tubes to see if it changes.
Turn the lights off and watch the wiring for sparks.
Work all of the controls to see if they aggravate the static.
Kindest regards and luck Jim K9AXN

Working on a Hallicrafters S-40A. Recently recapped and aligneed. Now when
I first turn the radio on I get a loud crackling from the speaker for
several minutes, even with the Volume and sensitivity full yclockwise.
Have already rechecked all my solder joints to ensure that they are good
and solid. Also made sure the ground tabs for the replacement can were
soldered to the chassis correctly. This helped some but still get the
crackling for abt 30-60 seconds.
Not sure where to look next. Any advice would help since I am still a
newbie at troubleshooting tube radios.
tnx es 73 de W7DTG Don
