[Hallicrafters] SX-28A question

I've recently purchased a SX-28A at an auction. The radio had a tag on it that said, "works, mostly". I found the the main tuning dial would turn the pointer most of the time. It sounds like gears are slipping or not fully engaged. Do I access that portion of the radio by removing the knobs and taking off the front panel?
