It really isn't a mystery.

The greatest number that I've been seeing are of the "oops" variety,
although the individuals haven't said so.

Others are "most likely" of the same variety. The remainder would
appear to be ones that you're Anti-Virus software have "gutted" because
they have a link inside that takes you where you don't want to go, or
get there inadvertently.

Duane can't possibly keep up with the message load! The list
owner/moderator of the R-390 list posted about this phenomena to the
list. It is hitting ALL QTH.NET lists equally hard, in spite of the
GREAT way the entire system is run.

We are simply experiencing the "new digital" methodology. It is "sort
of" bugging all of us.

I say this from one whom started with a 110 Baud modem and used to go to
bulletin boards, then graduated to the Internet as it began to blossom.
[I had my piece of helping that along while working for the Government.
I began setting up mailing lists/reflectors for Uncle Sam in the '80s.]

To be frank, it WILL get *worse* before it settles down and gets better.

The only "real" solution I can see in the future is those members that
are really the real ones, will "most likely" end up getting Verisign or
other Security Certificates, and have ALL their messages digitally signed.

Yes, it will be a pain in the rump. However, it is the only real way of
this getting under control.

The other issue is the use of web based E-mail. I am NOT going into
that and how it gets folks into trouble.
