The RCA 40673 dual gate MOSFET transistor was used as a low noise VHF front
end and mixer. It's big advantage is that it had self contained protective
diodes so that it could be handled relatively safely, unlike the typical
MOSFETs of the day that, due to their very high gate input impedances, were
extremely sensitive to static damage. They were relatively inexpensive and
offered some of the best (low) noise figures for VHF use. I'm not sure how
high they'd go as I've only seen them used up to about 220 MHz.
Typical GaAsFETs of today, are cheaper and offer even better VHF/UHF
performance, although, they must be handled carefully. This resulted in the
40673 falling out of favor and therefore out of production.
