Thanks for the several agreeing remedys for our knob problem. When I return to the workroom now I have a better feeling that the knobs will be on the table and not on the shafts.
By the way,
Some of you Hallicrafters fans who like Special Event operations, need to know that the 1-KW AM transmitter built by Marshall H. Ensor (W9BSP) in 1937 will soon go back on the air, after over 40 years of silence. It was used exclusively for the last 4 of his 10 years effort of "Teaching Radio by Radio" from the small 6 X 8 ft radio room attached to the farm home in 1924. From the winter of 1929, until December 7, 1941, Marshall Ensor, an instructor of Industrial Arts at the Olathe, KS High School, with assistance of his sister, Loretta, (W9UA) was able to teach unseen students estimated at near 10,000 to become licensed operators. Many became our military operators during that war.
The transmitter had been used on 160 Meters but after WW-2 was changed to 75 Meters AM plus MCW ( Modulated CW-now not allowed) which enabled listening students to copy CW with a built-in tone. A few members of MEMO [Marshall Ensor Memorial Organization] volunteered the effort to correct the ravages of years of being near windows passing direct sunlight. The work began in 2009 inside the farm museum kitchen during off season months. Final tests were completed in recent days. Not only was most of the wiring in need of replacement, numerous other components were as well. ALSO, many unseen mods have made the rig safe to operate regarding both high voltage and RF.
This grand event will be Saturday, December 8, beginning 7PM [Central zone]. Frequency, near 3885 -3886 kcs. Power is 315 to 325 Watts AM un-modulated, and legal limit in use. We'd love to also hear AM from you fellas on our SX-16. The restore team members are Harry Krout W0YQG, son Joe Krout W0PWJ, Larry Rosine W0OG, and myself W0HXS.
