Clarence, a ham at HCJB, developed the quad antenna.  I remember working him 
when he retired back to the states and he had a big signal on 20 with a 1000 
foot a leg horizontal loop.  He is now a SK.

Dr. Dave Fischer, then W0MHS (known as Loop Skywire) published an article in 
QST on the horizontal loop.  He is now W7FB.  Dr. Dave says the horizontal 
loop has elliptical patterns along with E and H patterns.
