Please join us tomorrow, Sunday March 18th, for the Hallicrafters 20 meter
Net. Time and frequency are shown below -
A Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all of those who are Irish and also to those
who are green just one day each year! Yes, I am wearing my green Shamrock!
St. Patrick's Day: Let There Be Sinners, Let There Be Saints
By Duane B. Fischer, W8DBF
A Happy St. Patrick's Day to all of our Irish brethren who
truly come from the Emerald Isles. To the rest of you, who
for one day each year either are a little bit Irish somewhere
in your sorted genetic past, or just fake it to get
free green beer and a shamrock pinned on your shirt by a
bonnie lass, 'the top of the morning to you!'
If you do not know the proper Irish response, listen up! "And
the rest of the day to you too!"
After you finish the traditional Irish Bacon and cabbage
meal, please join us for the Sunday March 18th Halligan's
Hallicrafters International 20 meter Net. For the
unenlightened among you, Bill Halligan was Irish. He was
third generation and the family lived in South Boston, MA.
His father ran a bait shop. Bill also opened an electronics
store there in 1939, a little place you may have heard of. It
was called "Radio Shack"! Fact, not blarney!
It will begin with the pre-Net at 12:30 PM EDT, (1630 UTC),
where one of our knowable Halli historians will explain how
green beer can be used to remove cold solder joints and
frayed wire insulation. Your jeans too if you dribble it!
If that is not enough to stimulate your curiosity to hang
around for the official Net at 1:00 PM EDT, (1700 UTC), you
have probably already had one too many Shamrock shakes and
need a nap. Or perhaps several cups of black coffee, two
aspirin and a cold shower! A swift kick in the apogee if all
else fails!
Not only will the Net be co-hosted by a for real live
Leprechaun, he is also selling raffle tickets to see if you
can name the Prince whose royal tights unraveled while trying
to kiss the Blarney Stone on live satellite video! Hey! Give
him a break! He used to be a stock broker but got busted
trying to fix the soles of other Elves!
This raffle ticket will also give the winner a chance to try
to run across an enchanted rainbow carrying a SX-101a, HT-37
and HT-41 without falling through it! If he makes it to the
Leprechauns pot of gold, he has to quickly snatch a handful
of gold coins and try to run back across the rainbow before
the guardian Troll chops his hand off with a razor sharp UPS
box knife! Since the world price for gold is over $1,400 per
Troy ounce, buying one of those raffle tickets may be a
chance worth taking!
Although the FCC does not allow Ham Radio operators to play
music on the air like the local DJ does, sometimes in the
background one can hear the Irish Rovers hum their classic
ballad about the Unicorn and Bing Crosby sings about the
wearing of the green,
the HHI Net will celebrate the start of its eleventh year of
existence. So set a Shamrock on your vintage gear, get out
your lucky four leaf clover and dance a little Irish jig
while those Hallicrafters tubes fill the room with a greenish
glow.
Join us for some good fun, some Irish wit, some folk lore,
some facts, some blarney and some fellowship guaranteed to
turn somebody somewhere green with envy, Irish or not! I hope
to hear you on 14.293+/- tomorrow. So join with us and let
those Irish eyes be smiling! And 'the top of the morning to
you'! And Irene, where ever you are at, good-night.
